Realme X7 Pro Review: An excellent offering from Realme set to change the game in the premium mid-range segment !!

Realme X7 Pro Review

Realme X7 Pro has some specifications that are hard to ignore!!

Realme came with its X7 series that includes the Realme X7 and the X7 Pro this year which sport a newer design, come with newer Mediatek Dimensity chipsets and the most highlighting factor is that both support 5G. In the mid-range segment, we had the Realme X3 Superzoom and now Realme X7 Pro is the newer one.

This is not the successor to the Realme X3 Superzoom (Review) but a new smartphone with all the whistles as it packs in some flagship specifications that include a newer Mediatek Dimensity 1000 Plus chipset, a 120Hz AMOLED display, a great set of cameras that include the 64MP main camera and has the faster charging like all other Realme smartphones.

The Realme X7 (Review) was quite an impressive smartphone with all the required necessities and the Realme X7 Pro does everything in a "Pro" manner. The specifications of the smartphone turn a lot of heads. So, has Realme put in the best foot forward in carving out such a beautiful product? Let's find out in the full review.

Realme X7 Pro Design:

Realme X7 Pro Review

The Realme X7 Pro sports a glass sandwich design both at the front as well as on the back. The gradient finish to the back provides a good look and Realme has gone for the AG Glass design with a matte finish that provides a good grip also. Like the front, the back of the Realme X7 Pro is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

There are two colors like the Realme X7 that include Mystic Black and Fantasy. The Fantasy color does look good as it provides a combination of different colors and there is a good color pattern when light strikes at the back. However, this looks amazing but there is a huge "Dare To Leap" logo that is just extras. For those who want a plain look, then the Mystic Black color is the better option.

Like the Oppo Reno 5 Pro (Review), the Realme X7 Pro also has a slimmer body at 8.5mm and weighs around 184grams which makes it quite lighter and easier to hold as the weight distribution has been done well.  At the back, like the Realme X7, you have a rectangular module that houses quad cameras with a LED flash. The camera bump is not so protruding which is a good thing.

To the sides, the power button is present on the right side whereas the volume buttons lie on the left side. At the bottom, there is a USB Type-C port, a loudspeaker grille, a primary noise-canceling microphone, and a dual SIM card slot. There is no room for storage expansion since there is no microSD card slot present.

To the top, there is only a secondary noise-canceling microphone and just above the display, there is a speaker, and coming to the display, there is a single punch hole camera present in the display with minimum bezels to the sides. For protection, the Realme X7 Pro has a P2i coating which makes it splash-proof against water.

Overall, the build and design feel premium on the Realme X7 Pro.

Realme X7 Pro Display:

Realme X7 Pro Review

The Realme X7 Pro has a 6.55 inches Full HD+ (1080x2400 pixels) Super AMOLED display with a screen to body ratio of 20:9. It has a single punch hole camera to the top left corner in the display and when you look at the display, the bezels are almost minimum to the sides.

This display supports a 120Hz refresh rate and has a 240Hz touch sampling rate, so scrolling through webpages, playing games, and multi-tasking felt much smoother on the smartphone. This is something that smartphone users need a high refresh rate and AMOLED together. So since it is an AMOLED display, the color reproduction is excellent and the viewing angles are really good.

Realme X7 Pro Review

The display supports Super Nighttime Standby, has DC dimming which reduces screen flickering in low-lighting conditions and under direct sunlight, the brightness works really good as it can go as bright as 1200 nits, and simultaneously, the display can go very dim at dark thus not affecting the eyes. There are a lot of other options for the display.

Realme X7 Pro Review

You can set the color temperature from warmer to cooler or choose default and like Oppo smartphones, there is OSIE visual effect that boosts the display brightness i.e. for example while watching a video, the display is at 60fps which at the normal time is at 30fps. The Always-On display can be customized easily and there is an enhanced Dark Mode also.

Realme X7 Pro Review

The display on the Realme X7 Pro has support for Widevine L1, so streaming HD contents from Netflix, Prime, etc work well and the presence of HDR means you can stream Youtube contents at HD resolution. There is an optical in-display fingerprint scanner that is accurate and fast and the same goes for the face unlock as well.

The Realme X7 Pro impresses in terms of the display as it provides a great combination of 120Hz refresh rate and an AMOLED display being the cheapest smartphone to have it.

Realme X7 Pro Performance:

Like the Oppo Reno 5 Pro, the Realme X7 Pro is powered by the Mediatek Dimensity 1000 Plus chipset which is built on a 7nm process and is an octa-core chipset that has 4x2.6 GHz Cortex A77 cores for performance and another 4x2.0 GHz Cortex A55 cores for power efficiency and is coupled with the Mali-G77 MC9 GPU.

This is a very powerful chipset from Mediatek as it supports 5G and all daily activities like multitasking, scrolling through webpages, and playing games felt much easier on the smartphone. The 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate mean you get super smooth animations and faster touch inputs while gaming.

All heavy games like Call of Duty, Asphalt 9 Legends played smoothly on the smartphone with no stutter at the highest graphics settings and at the highest frame rate which you have to choose. We also played Gensian Impact which is a heavy graphics-intensive game that ran also smoothly without any problem.

After gaming for three to four hours continuously for three to four hours, the back of the smartphone did not feel warmer especially the chipset being fabricated at an efficient 7nm process and the liquid cooling helps maintain peak temperature also. However, the Realme X7 Pro only comes in one variant i.e. an 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB storage variant with UFS 2.1 speeds.

Realme X7 Pro Review

In terms of benchmarks, the Realme X7 Pro scores 733 and 2435 in single and multi-core tests in Geekbench 5.1 and around 5067882 in Antutu v8. These scores are higher than the Snapdragon 855+ found in the Realme X3 Superzoom and almost close to that of the Snapdragon 865 chipset used in the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro (Review) which scores around 564199 in Antutu v8.

So performance is no slouch and you are getting a flagship-level performance and gaming on the Realme X7 Pro. Plus the support for 5G is an added advantage.

Realme X7 Pro Software:

Realme X7 Pro Review

There is RealmeUI running built on top of Android 10 out of the box on the Realme X7 Pro. This is the older RealmeUI 1.0 and the newer RealmeUI 2.0 built on top of Android 11 will be shortly coming to the Realme X7 Pro. The software experience has been improving with each update on the RealmeUI.

Like Stock Android or the OxygenOS, the RealmeUI brings a very good and smooth experience but there are some downsides also. Talking about the RealmeUI, you get all the regular features such as system-wide dark mode, navigation gestures, three-finger swipe down enables split-screen, smart sidebar to customize different apps for use, and an Always-On display also.

RealmeUI also has some hardware-specific features like DC dimming to prevent flickering in the dark, Smooth scrolling to ensure smooth scrolling through webpages, Super Night-Time Standby that saves battery by restricting many applications at night, etc. The icons can be customized in terms of size and you can use third-party icon packs also.

Realme X7 Pro Review

There are stock applications like a dialler, messaging, and a calendar also. The fingerprint scanner can be customized and there are different designs also. However, some things in the RealmeUI do let down like there are a lot of third-party applications pre-installed which consumes memory and there are a lot of notifications that do irritate from time to time from the browser or other applications also.

The presence of ads in the RealmeUI is a bit jarring and you can turn that off from the settings also. Other than that there are a bunch of Realme-specific applications like Realme Community, Paysa, and GameSpace which enhance the gaming experience.

Realme X7 Pro Cameras:

Realme X7 Pro Review

The Realme X7 Pro has a really impressive set of cameras. It has a quad-camera setup that includes a 64MP f/1.8 Sony IMX686 sensor for the main camera, an 8MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP Black and White sensor for portraits. On the front, there is a 32MP camera for the selfies.

The images from the main camera come out with excellent details and the colors look punchier also. The colors look oversaturated at times but still, the dynamic range is very good. Focus works really well and the white balance is well handled. There is some noise present but with the HDR mode on, the colors look punchier and the exposure is well maintained.

But when you move to low-light or at night, the images from the main camera have an average dynamic range and a lot of noise is present in the background thus crushing the details in the shadows. The colors look slightly washed out also. But turning on the Night Mode does improve the scenes a lot better.

With the Night Mode on, the dynamic range is improved, noise is reduced and the colors do look better also. The highlights in shadows are restored and the exposure is well maintained in the images. There are some very cool Night Filters - Flamingo, Modern Gold, and Cyberpunk to give some extra look to the images shot at night.

The 8MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera is the same as most mid-range smartphones. The images from it have an average dynamic range and good details. The color saturation is good but not as good as the primary camera. The noise is clearly present but the 119-degree wider field of view does ensure all objects are captured in the image.

At night, the images from the ultrawide camera come out with average dynamic range with average contrast. There is a lot of noise present and the colors look oversaturated. The presence of a Night Mode does mask some noise and restore the highlights and distortion to the edges.

The third camera is a 2MP macro camera which does a decent job of taking close-up images with average details and dynamic range. The colors look inconsistent and there is a lot of noise present. However, the presence of autofocus does help lock focus quickly on an object and you can go as close as 4cm.

The 2MP depth sensor is used for portraits. The portraits come out with good details and a dynamic range. When you zoom into the portraits, the colors look well saturated and the edge detection works well. There is a proper background blur and you can adjust it accordingly.

On the front, the images from the 32MP camera come out with good details and the dynamic range is also good. The skin smoothening is enabled by default which can be turned off especially the AI Beauty Mode. The portraits come out good but edge detection and dynamic range could have been better. However, color reproduction needs some improvement on the front-facing camera.

On the video side, the maximum recording is capped at 4K at 60fps. The videos have good stabilization though there is no OIS present and the colors look oversaturated on the main camera. The dynamic range is good but there is some amount of noise present. There are Ultra Steady option to get stabilized videos and is only restricted to 1080p resolution.

The ultrawide camera is only restricted to 1080p video recording. The videos do have a lot of noise and the dynamic range is just average. At night, the NightScape 4.0 works well on the main camera thus reducing a good amount of noise and also improves the dynamic range. The videos from the ultrawide camera have a lot of distortion and the colors look washed out.

For videos, there are a couple of other options like a Slow-Mo mode, Ultra Macro mode, Text Scanner, and Movie mode for videos. The Slow-Mo videos can do recorded at 720p at 240fps.

Realme X7 Pro Review

The cameras do feel quite impressive on the Realme X7 Pro and feel much better for the premium mid-range segment.

 Realme X7 Pro Battery Life:

Realme X7 Pro Review

The Realme X7 Pro sports a 4500mAh battery which is good considering the size of the display. But since it has a higher 120Hz display, the battery life is somewhat average which means not too good nor too bad. With normal usage, the smartphone could easily last for two continuous days without a single charge with the display being set to 120Hz.

With heavy usage like gaming Call of Duty for three to four hours, attending phone calls for longer hours, scrolling through webpages, the Realme X7 Pro easily lasted for one single day with some amount of battery left. The standard screen-on time was hovering around 6-7 hours which is quite good.

Switching the display to 60Hz would result in some extra screen-on time and since the chipset is built on the efficient 7nm process and the Cortex A77 cores are much more power-efficient, the battery life is good. Realme has provided quite some handy features like a Power Saving Mode, Sleep Standby Optimization, and a Screen Battery Optimization also.

With the Realme X7 Pro, you are getting a 65W SuperDart charging solution which fuels the smartphone from 0 to 100 percent in under 35 minutes. A 5-minute charge for the smartphone could easily last for one single day and RealmeUI has also some improved battery optimizations.

The battery life feels good on the smartphone and the charging solution just lifts the appeal further.

Realme X7 Pro Audio Quality:

The Realme X7 Pro has a set of dual stereo speakers which sound really good and the loudness does not feel distorted at the highest settings. There is support for Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res audio which further enhances the sound experience. The sound also feels much better amplified and the level of bass feels much better.

However, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack which most of the manufacturers do not offer but Realme does bundle a 3.5mm headphone jack to USB Type-C connector inside the box. With the wireless earphones, the sound feels much better, and overall, the multimedia and gaming experience feels better on the Realme X7 Pro.

Verdict:

Overall, the Realme X7 Pro feels like a solid premium mid-range smartphone for what it offers. It has a larger 120Hz display that is AMOLED, a good build and design, an impressive set of cameras, good battery life with faster charging, and good audio quality with the presence of stereo speakers.

There are many other competitors in the mid-range segment that include the OnePlus Nord, Xiaomi Mi 10i, Vivo V20 Pro which caters to different requirements like if you want the most refined software experience, then the OnePlus Nord (Review) is a good option, Vivo V20 Pro (Review) has the best cameras and the Xiaomi Mi 10i (Review) combines everything in a good cheaper price.

The Oppo Reno 5 Pro which is slightly higher in price compared to the Realme X7 Pro is a very good option if you want a slimmer body and a great set of features. But still, with the Realme X7 Pro, everything is good except that the cameras need some improvement, and the other being the RealmeUI which could have been more refined.

Leaving these two factors, the Realme X7 Pro is a well-balanced smartphone with the best in class performance and combines all other things to put out a great product in the market.
