Realme 6 Pro Review: Is this the best mid-ranger from Realme that can make a bold move in the market?

With a 90Hz display, a great set of cameras, the Realme 6 Pro has a lot to be considered.

Realme 6 series smartphones launched this year brings a newer design with some very good features and is a big upgrade over the last year's Realme 5 series. The Realme 6 and the 6 Pro are one of the best offerings in the mid-range segment with full HD+ 90Hz displays, 64MP cameras, etc. giving tough competitions to brands like Xiaomi, Samsung which have some very well established smartphones to compete with the Realme smartphones.

Realme 6 is a very good offering as it brings with it a 90Hz display, a powerful gaming chipset, and support for 30W VOOC charging at a starting price of Rs.12999 which is a very good value for money option.

The Realme 6 Pro also brings some very good features with a large display with a 90Hz refresh rate and the most striking of all is the presence of a telephoto camera which is seen on a smartphone that starts at a price tag of Rs.16999. Realme has other offerings with the likes of the Realme X2, XT that also provide some very good features like an AMOLED display, in-display fingerprint scanner, and much more in the mid-range segment.

Will the Realme 6 Pro prove to be the best mid-ranger and is it worth buying at this price?

Realme 6 Pro Design:

In terms of design, the Realme 6 Pro sports a premium design both at the front as well as back. Both the front and back are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and there is a screen protector pre-applied on the smartphone.

On the front, there is a massive 6.6 inches display with almost fewer bezels to the sides. The front camera is the dual-hole punch cutout which is similar to the one on the POCO X2. The earpiece lies on the top and coming to the back, there is a lightning design that looks striking when viewed at different angles. The camera setup looks similar to other Realme smartphones.

The back being glass catches a lot of fingerprints but Realme provides a case that is provided inside the box. The back is protected with P2i coating which means it is splash resistant.

On the sides is a plastic frame where on the right, is a power button which doubles up as a fingerprint scanner, and to the left are the volume controls and the SIM card slot which accepts two nano dual SIMs and there is also a dedicated microSD card slot for further expansion.

On the top, there is a noise-canceling microphone and there isn't an IR Blaster which is seen on Redmi smartphones. At the bottom, there is a USB Type-C port with a loudspeaker and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

At 202grams, the weight of the smartphone is felt as it has a massive battery. Realme 6 Pro is available in three colors: Lightning Blue, Lightning Red, and Lightning Orange which looks very striking from the back. Overall the build and design feel premium for a smartphone at this price point.

Realme 6 Pro Display:

The Realme 6 Pro sports a 6.6 inches IPS LCD full HD+ (1080x2400 pixels) display with a screen to body ratio of 20:9. The pixel density is 399ppi and compared to the previous Realme 5 Pro, the Realme 6 Pro has a much brighter panel so colors look brighter and come out better.

The talking point about this smartphone's display is the 90Hz refresh rate which makes the display unique in this segment. It's own rival, the POCO X2 comes with a slightly higher 120Hz refresh rate which doesn't make much of a difference. Scrolling through applications whether closing or opening, all actions feel smoother and this also helps while playing games that support the 90Hz refresh rate.

Under direct sunlight, the screen is partially visible unless turned to full brightness. The contrast of the screen is good but doesn't have the color reproduction that is seen on an AMOLED display. As with AMOLED, you get great viewing angles, and the legibility whether under direct sunlight or in dark feels better than an IPS LCD panel.

The fingerprint scanner is placed on the power button and does need a little bit of improvement as it is slightly slower to respond. The face-unlock works well most of the time.

The screen lacks an HDR10 certification which seems to be a letdown but supports Widevine L1 thus enabling to stream HD content from Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

The front dual camera cut out looks good and is a personal preference. However, the bezel-less display with the higher refresh rate is surely going to catch a lot of attention and feels slightly better when compared to its rivals.

Realme 6 Pro Performance:

Powering the Realme 6 Pro is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset which is also present on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 series. This is almost the same chipset as the Snapdragon 730/730G found on the Realme X2, POCO X2, etc. However, the performance cores have been tweaked slightly on the Snapdragon 720G with a clock speed of 2.3GHz compared to 2.2GHz on the Snapdragon 730/730G.

Then this new chipset brings along India's NavIC feature with support for Bluetooth 5.1.
The chipset has 2x2.3 GHz Kryo 465 Gold cores & another 6x1.8 GHz Kryo 465 Silver cores coupled with an Adreno 618 GPU. This chipset is built on the same 8nm process as the Snapdragon 730/730G. The performance feels smooth and switching between applications, doing multitasking, etc.

The Realme 6 with the Mediatek Helio G90T is also similar to the Snapdragon 720G having 2+6 cores configuration but here the 8nm process on the Snapdragon 720G means better battery life and is much more efficient compared to the 12nm process on the Mediatek Helio G90T. The smartphone ships with 6/8GB RAM with 64/128 GB storage (all having UFS 2.1).

When it comes to gaming like PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty, the Realme 6 Pro can handle all games easily but when playing the game in the highest graphics settings does result in slight frame drops and the back tends to get a bit warm. The higher refresh rate helps in smooth gaming and controls in the game feels much faster and smoother.
Coming to benchmarks, on AnTuTu, the Realme 6 Pro scores 267845 which are slightly lower than the Mediatek Helio G90T found on the Realme 6. Similarly, on Geekbench 5.1, the single-core score is 562, and the multi-core score is 1672 which is slightly better than the Mediatek Helio G90T's 523 and 1603 respectively.

Overall the performance and gaming feel good on the Realme 6 Pro and don't disappoint.

Realme 6 Pro Software:

Like all other Realme smartphones, the Realme 6 Pro runs RealmeUI out of the box built on Android 10. With the move from ColorOS to RealmeUI, the UI feels smoother and easier to use. All controls fall easy to use and there is a lot of customizations to the icons and the themes.

The RealmeUI brings along the system-wide dark mode, a dedicated space for all games called the GameSpace which tweaks the CPU and GPU while gaming, There is some amount of bloatware present and can be uninstalled when not needed. There is a good feature called the Dual Music share that enables audio to be used when using both wireless and wired headset.

The RealmeUI feels smoother and the experience is almost close to Stock Android. There is even a dedicated App Drawer that looks better. The software updates to the RealmeUI is also good as it consistently brings some good upgrades to the smartphone.

Realme 6 Pro Camera:

The Realme 6 Pro like all other smartphones come with a quad-camera setup where all the cameras remain the same i.e. a 64MP main camera which is found on almost all mid-range smartphones, an ultrawide camera, a macro camera but instead of the depth camera, now the Realme 6 Pro takes one leap forward by having a telephoto camera. So the cameras are as follows:
  • 64MP f/1.8 Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor for the main camera
  • 8MP f/2.3 ultrawide camera with 119-degree field of view
  • 12MP f/2.5 telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and 20x hybrid zoom
  • 2MP macro camera.
The main camera is the same that is found on the Realme 6, which is the 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor which uses a Quad Bayer filter and results out 16MP images. This main sensor does the duty on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, Realme X2, XT, etc.

The images during the day come out really good with crisp detail and punchier colors. The contrast works well and the dynamic range is also wide enough. Realme by default enables Chromaboost which over-boost the colors in the images.

There is a good amount of detail in the images but when zoomed in, then the images seem to lose a little bit of detail. With the HDR turned on, the images turned out much detailed.

During the night, the main camera performs well as it captures a good amount of detail and the colors retain well in the images. The level of detail in the shadows comes out good but some noise is present.

To combat the noise, the NightScape works pretty well as it captures a whole amount of detail thus improving upon the contrast and level of details come out better.

The 16MP images result in many clear and crisp images and the color does look washed out in the images.

The 8MP ultrawide camera does a decent job in taking images with a good amount of detail but somehow lacks the details and the colors aren't as punchier as the images taken from the main camera. The noise is quite prominent in the images but the dynamic range is well maintained.

At night, the images taken have decent details and there is a lot of noise but things do change when the night mode is taken into consideration as it captures well-detailed images with slightly punchier colors but still this camera needs a lot of improvement.

The Realme 6 Pro is one of those of the few smartphones that sports a telephoto camera at this price range. The 12MP f/2.5 camera takes very good shots with excellent details but there is some amount of noise in the images. With 2x optical zoom, the images come out much better with good color saturation and there isn't any over sharpness in the background.

2x optical zoom

5x digital zoom

20x optical zoom

This camera can also do a 5x optical zoom and 20x hybrid zoom where the images tend to lose details and the color seems to be washed out. The images come out with decent details and colors look washed out.

At night, the telephoto camera captures nicely zoomed-in images with a good amount of detail. The dynamic range is good and when using the NightScape, the images turn out to be really good as the 2x optical zoom worked very well and the noise was well maintained.

The 2MP macro camera does a decent job of taking macro shots but the color in the images does look a bit washed out and the edge detection is decent. However, it lacks the dynamic range and there is quite a bit of noise in the images.

On the front, the Realme 6 Pro houses dual cameras of which the main camera houses a 16MP f/2.1 sensor which takes very good images and combined with it is an 8MP ultrawide camera that aides in taking wider selfies. The images come out good with punchier colors and the skin tones look natural. The dynamic range is also wide and with HDR turned on, the images add a slightly warmer tone to the images.

The 8MP ultrawide camera helps in capturing wider shots with a good amount of details and is helpful when taking wider selfies with friends and families.
Coming to portraits, the Realme 6 Pro does a decent job in taking portraits as the edge detection works fine but the background blur needs slight improvement. Overall the front camera is a good one compared to many other smartphones in this range.

The Realme 6 Pro supports 4k video recording at 30fps with the main 64MP camera and the 12MP telephoto camera. The ultrawide camera is only restricted to 1080p video recording.
The video footage from the main camera came out good but the level of color saturation wasn't so good and the videos came out a little bit shaky. The dynamic range was good enough and zooming in to the video, the details are average.

Switching to 1080p, the videos came out well stabilized as the EIS kicks in, thus helping it capture less noise and more stable footage with punchier colors and better detail.
The videos taken from the ultrawide camera come out good but do lack the richness but works decently well.

There is even the Ultra Steady Mode which does a good job of taking ultrawide videos.
The videos taken from the telephoto camera come out great with a nice level of detail and while zooming at 2x, there isn't any loss in detail but at 5x and 20x, the videos lack the color and look grainy.

The Realme 6 Pro can also take Super Slow Motion videos capped at 960fps.
The front camera also takes good videos and the footage maxes out at 1080p and similarly for the ultrawide camera and both can shoot at 30fps so the videos come out well stabilized and the audio also sounds good.
Overall the Realme 6 Pro provides one of the best cameras for a smartphone at this price range.

Realme 6 Pro Battery Life:

The Realme 6 Pro packs a larger 4300mAh battery which is the same found on the Realme 6. The smartphone easily lasted for a day with moderate to heavy usage at 90Hz. Lowering down the refresh rate at 60Hz, the battery can easily stretch up to 2 days.

With 60Hz of refresh rate set and with normal usage that includes normal web browsing, playing light games, and viewing social media, the smartphone can easily last for two days.
The standard screen on time is 5-6 hours which is good considering the chipset is built on an 8nm process. With heavy games like PUBG Mobile for 3-4 hours, the smartphone can last for one single day with 20-25 percent left.

There is support for 30W VOOC charging which is the fastest and can charge the Realme 6 Pro from 0 to 67 percent in 30 minutes which is good and charges completely to 100 takes around 67 minutes.

The Realme 6 Pro also supports fast charging through USB Power Delivery up to 15W which is a very good feature.

Realme 6 Pro Sound Quality:

The Realme 6 Pro only comes with a single firing speaker at the bottom which is adequately loud. The level of sound is good and does not feel mushy. The sound is further enhanced by the Dolby Atmos while watching videos, listening to music, etc.

The sound through the 3.5mm headphone jack also feels good and the loudness levels are good enough while shooting a video.

The earpiece is adequately loud while taking calls and doesn't feel mushy. However, the lack of stereo speakers does seem to let down a bit.

Verdict:

The Realme 6 Pro proves itself a very compelling buy with all the specifications and does seem to target the audience who want a good overall smartphone in the mid-range segment. The Realme 6 Pro has a lot going for it as there is a gorgeous 90Hz display, a powerful Snapdragon 720G chipset, and a powerful set of cameras. Plus this is one of the first smartphones to have a telephoto camera under Rs.20000.

The smartphone looks stunning with its lightning design and the cameras do a very good job for photos and videos. The 4300mAh battery provides good battery life and to charge it, the massive 30W VOOC charger charges the smartphone very fast.

However the LCD panel does feel short when compared to an AMOLED panel which is seen on the Realme X2, then the ultrawide camera needs a little bit of improvement, and considering all other factors the Realme 6 Pro is a very good buy starting at Rs.16999. It does seem a bit pricy as the Realme 5 Pro was launched at Rs.13999 but the upgrades are a massive one.

The Realme 6 Pro is available in three storage and RAM options: 6GB/8GB RAM with 64GB/128GB storage. With a streaming price of Rs.16999, the Realme 6 Pro with a great display, a great set of cameras, and good performance and gaming can make a strong bold move in the mid-range segment in the market and with all the features makes it worth buying at this price range.
